Does Insurance Cover Accent Modification?

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I am often asked “Does insurance cover accent modification?”. The short answer is no; it’s considered a difference, not a disorder. Unfortunately, many clients pay for accent modification services out of pocket. So, it’s important for services to be as succinct and effective as possible.

Here are 4 strategies for finding reduced-cost accent modification services.

Corporate Training

A lot of companies set aside money for professional education and training each year. Reach out to your HR department within your company to see if they would be willing to organize and fund accent modification services for employees. HR specialists may not even be aware that accent modification is a service that can be easily done in a corporate or group setting. Additionally, some companies may reimburse individuals who receive professional speaking or accent modification services. So, go ahead and ask! Your colleagues will thank you. 🤩

SLP Graduate Programs

Check if a university near you offers a graduate degree in Speech-Language Pathology. If so, they most likely have an on-campus clinic, and you can receive services from a graduate clinician at a free or reduced rate. These graduate clinicians are closely supervised by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and provide high-quality services. I think my clients like my graduate clinicians more than they like me. 😝

Adult Education Courses

Check your local community college to see if they offer adult education classes on accent modification, professional speaking, or accent and dialect training. If not, request these topics! There are probably local professionals in your area who would be more than happy to teach. 🏢

Groups

Reach out to professionals who offer accent modification and see if they work with groups. If so, collect a group of friends or coworkers to work together and get the discounted group rate. These services can be done online or in person. 👥

Other Notes

According to Turbo Tax, accent modification services can be a tax write-off. A community Q&A states that “training that maintains or improves your skills in your present line of work, even when such education is not mandatory for keeping your business going is a legitimate business expense.” Of course, check with your tax professional on how to best do this.

While insurance does not cover accent modification, some clients do need speech therapy for services that are covered such as voice, fluency, or articulation issues. Check with your insurance and SLP regarding diagnoses and coverage for those services.
