Halloween Speech Therapy Ideas

Halloween Speech Therapy Ideas

Fall is my favorite season. I love walking in the crisp weather, watching the leaves change, and drinking hot apple cider. As a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), I want to incorporate all the things that go with the season into sessions. Here are some awesome Halloween speech therapy ideas for your sessions!

Environmental sounds

There is a lot you can do with environmental sounds. Ask your clients what sound they would make to imitate the following:

  • Witch’s laugh
  • Blowing wind
  • Howling woof
  • Scary ghost
  • Creaking door
  • Screaming children
  • Doorbell

You can also flip it and play a short sound recording then have the client guess the source. Then elaborate on that by describing things in more detail. For example, after listening to a doorbell, talk about when you would ring a doorbell, what do you say on Halloween when someone opens the door, and how you can tell if a house wants Trick or Treaters.

Things to describe

Choose a category and have the client list as many items as they can in that category. You can also do this in reverse where you list items and have the client name the category. Here is a list of categories to get you started:

  • Pumpkin (shapes/sizes/faces)
  • Candy
  • Decorations
  • Costumes
  • Party food
  • Fall clothes
  • Trick or Treating

To expand on this activity, have the client state similarities and differences of items in categories. For example, Hershey kisses and Reese’s Pieces are both candies. They are similar because they both have chocolate, but one also has peanut butter.

Favorite games

I love Fall so much that I use some season-specific games all year round. Here are my favorite games.

For younger kids:

ABCYA Make a Pumpkin

Starfall Pumpkin

PBS Kids Dress Up Time

For older kids:

Write a progressive story– With a progressive story, each person adds a sentence to the story and see which direction it goes in. Choose a topic of Fall or Halloween. For more fun, add pictures that the student finds on Google.

Using Google– Give your student descriptions of what to Google related to Fall or Halloween (for example- what is small, black, and thought to bring bad luck).
