Tips for Blogging
Tips for Blogging
I love blogging! It has become not only a hobby but a form of therapy for me. I look forward to blogging because I get to share information with others in a creative way. I love teaching, and blogging is like doing that in written format 🤩 It also helps me organize my thoughts and makes me a better Speech-Language Pathologist, presenter, and clinical educator. Here are 7 tips for blogging.
Use odd numbers
Google rewards those who use its unspoken rules. One of those rules is to use odd numbers in your captions. In this blog, I am giving you 7 tips for blogging. When giving any list, stick to an odd number of items if possible.
SEO
Think about SEO, which stands for search engine optimization. By using commonly searched for terms, or keywords, on your website, and in your blog, Google will pick these out for people and drive them to your sites. A great (free) source to search for SEO terms on any topic is UberSuggest. You can search up to three terms… on any device. So, if you have multiple devices, you get three free searches on each of those 😀
Another SEO feature is long tail keywords (LTKW). This refers to the phrases, questions, or sentences that people Google. You want your headers to include short keywords and then add in your long-tail keywords throughout.
For example, if your topic writing a blog, your short keywords will be writing a blog and you may include this in your headers such as Tips for Writing a Blog, Writing a Blog. Your LTKWs may be how do I write a blog, tell me how to write a blog, best ways to write a blog.
Batch Content
Once you have your topic and keywords, go ahead and knock out a few posts. Google does reward you for being consistent. So, instead of posting them whenever you create them, schedule the posts ahead of time. I use WordPress and it’s so easy! I write the post, format it in WordPress, add images, and then select the date I want it to post.
Batching also saves you time in the long run. You may find that you sit down to write one post and realize it’s enough content for two or three. That’s a big win! If you have a difficult time thinking of content, take bits from emails or other resources and turn that into a post. I have used email responses, book content, and PPT slides as inspiration for my posts. 🌟
Use images
Images are important for blogging! They break up content for the reader and add visual aesthetics. They also are Google-able. Yes, you can add alt texts to your images in your blog posts that may show up under the images section on Google.
My two favorite websites for finding FREE pictures that are for commercial use are Unsplash.com and Pixabay.com.
Repurpose Content
It’s ok to repurpose content, in fact, it’s better for you and your followers. You will have different followers on your website then you will TikTok, Instagram, and other social media platforms. Go ahead and repost pieces of your blog post on these other platforms!
Use Headers 1-3
Font size matters. You should use Heading 1 for the title of your post and Heading 2 or Heading 3 for your subheaders. Everything else is paragraph font. This is important for Google liking your post and for the reader.
CTA
At the end of the post, you should end with a CTA or call to action. You want the reader to be motivated or inspired to do something. A few examples that I see often are:
- Let me know if you agree with _______
- Tell me below, what is your favorite ______
- Comment below👇 which number made you say, “I need to do that” 1, 2, or 3?
- What do you need the most help with from the list above?
