7 Ways to Use Tik Tok in Speech Therapy
Tik Tok is a video-focused, social networking platform. You can find anything on Tik Tok from make-up tips and the latest trends to educational content and medical advice (although be wary of some content). People love Tik Tok because of its interactive and entertaining nature. The video clips are limited to 60 seconds, which is just enough time to get a person hooked while not exceeding their attention span.
So, Tik Tok is here to stay. Why not find a way to incorporate it into speech therapy activities? Here are 7 ideas for using Tik Tok in speech therapy sessions. Warning: You will need to filter some of the content yourself. 🙈
1️⃣ Ask comprehension questions
Watch videos and ask the client comprehension questions about the narrative. For example, ask them what the person is doing, what is going on in the video, what just happened, how did the person do that, etc. 👂🏼
2️⃣ Describe the video
Have the client retell the narrative from the video. Encourage them to use as much descriptive vocabulary as possible. 👄
3️⃣ Have the client search for content
Give the client an idea of what to look for and have them think of what to type into the search bar. This is a great way to have the client think of the main idea. 🔍
4️⃣ Predict what will happen
Pause the videos and have the client predict what will happen next, what could go wrong, and what could go well. Then ask them to give you a rationale as to why they think that. 🤔
5️⃣ Sequence events
Have the client sequence the events from the video. It’s a great way to describe what happened first, second, next, and last.
6️⃣ Categorize videos
Watch videos and discuss all the categories that it could fall under. Would it fall under education or entertainment, modern or classic, food or beauty? Does one channel have just one category or videos from multiple categories?
7️⃣ Understanding and using humor
While there is educational content on Tik Tok, most of it is for entertainment purposes. The humor is endless. Watch videos with the client and discuss what is funny, idioms and slang used, and when they might use something similar.
